Tourist Attractions in Chiayi City

Chiayi Park
Chiayi Park is located at the east side of Chiayi City. The park has contains the history of Chiayi City such as the No. 21 Steam Locomotive, Sun-Shooting Tower, Tiger, Bats and Shu Chieun, Confucian Temple, Fu Kang An Credit Stone Tablet, Ping Wu Earthquake Monument, 12 Ancient Cannons, Chen Teng Po 's Easel, The Tao of Wall, and I Chiang San Monument.

Sun-Shooting Tower
Sun-Shooting Tower, 62 meters in height, takes the shape of the sacred tree on Mt. Ali. Brown stripes are similar to grains of the sacred tree. In the middle is a 40-meter-high gap called "a glimmer of day", and the interior is of bronze carvings from the myth of aborigine “Sun shooting”. This beautiful myth illustrates the spirit to carry on the heritage so as to pave the way for future generations. It is quite inspiring and educational.

Historical Archives Building
Two buildings for historic archives of Chiayi City were religious fast house and social affair house affiliated to Chiayi Shrine in the Japanese colony. The Historic Archives Building of Chiayi City has been listed as historic site. Fast house was a place of fast and preparation before sacrifices and social affairs house is an office for shrine administration management.

The Fountain
In 1970, when Ms. Shih-hsien Hsu was the city major, a colorful central fountain was installed. In the middle of the pond stood a bronze statue of our national Father, Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The fountain inside the pool contains 14 kinds of variations, every 15 minutes in a cycle. Fountain water can reach 20 meters high. Especially in the nighttime, water surges in the air with various wonderful and beautiful colors.

Pei Men Station
Pei Men Station (Northern Gate Station) is the start of Mt. Ali railroad station. The building was totally made of red Chinese Cypress in simple and elegant style.

Holland Lake
The Holland Lake is located in the neighborhood of Tzu Ting, Tung Chia mountain near Chiayi City, three kilometers off downtown , called " red-hair pond" on the older days. It was rumored that it was dug by the Dutch 300 years ago, so it is now called “ Holland Lake ”.
Main rivers in Chiayi City are respectively flowing through the Pa Cha river and the Po Tzu river. Soil with clay composition and poor underground waters result in water shortage. To resolve the problem of water shortage, the Holland Lake and Jen-Yi-Tan Dam were built in the Pa Cha Streams to satisfy the people's livelihood and irrigation requirement.

Chiayi City Museum
The Chiayi City Museum is located with the Chiayi City Municipal Cultural Center. The museum features regular exhibition with Geological Hall, Fossil Hall, and Mr. Chemg-Po Chen Memorial Area. There are also 3 halls for special exhibitions along with Koji Pottery Workshop and Internship classroom.

Koji Pottery Building
Chiayi is a hometown of Koji pottery. Japanese even called it as" Chiayi burns". Most Koji pottery artists learn their skills in Chiayi. Koji pottery were used in temples as adornment on early days in its traditional topics of fishing, woodcutting , farming, reading and some arrangements of insects, fish, birds, flowers, grass and plus drama scenes. The content of characters was clear in harmony.
Most Koji pottery are installed on the height of a temple, often seen in wall, ridge, gable, courtyard wall, etc. Koji pottery is delicate, bright, gorgeous in colors, like precious stones and emeralds. It has gradually become civilian collections, walking off the temple to the living room.
Koji pottery building in Chiayi City was open to public in May 2000 in an interior area of about 300 pings.

Botanical Garden
The botanical garden in an area of about 8.6 hectares belongs to the Forestry Experimental Institute of Agricultural Council, an experimental place for planning & development of the economic tropical trees. The planted trees have special features with humanities, such as well-known mahogany, Chinese firs, blackboard trees, Brazil rubber trees and so forth.
Trees inside the park magnificently stand high like in a forest, presenting the simple nature in a secluded and peaceful spirit. The luxuriant wooded walking paths zigzag. A primitive stone tablet “fresh breeze in farmland ”, one of eight scenic spots in Chiayi, seems to tell us how graceful the park is.

228 Memorial Parks
The 228 Memorial Parks Symbolizing ethnic harmony is located at crossroad of Chi Ming Rd. and Ta Yeh Rd. an total area of about 0.7 hectares. Inside the memorial hall are exhibition room, meeting room, information room, etc. The whole memorial building is built in a way of half covered in the underground., manifesting " being successful ". Chulo weeping wall, Chulo annual ring, artistic copper door and 27-meter- high monument, etc. eight scenic sports, each having its unique significance.

Chiayi City God Temple
The god of the city is also called Lord City , symbolizing local guarding god and religious center for Chiayi residents. From ancient time, it has been closely tied with general public with continues joss sticks burning.
The current city god temple was rebuilt under Wang Chin-Mu, craftsman from Chung Chow. The building is magnificent and beautiful, especially in sculpture. The eight diagrams well in worshiping hall, main entrance of main hall, arched supporting are connected without a single nail. The workmanship is so wonderful and superb.

Wunhua Rd. Night Market
In the evening, vendors selling clothes, fruit, light repast appear one after another on market, turning Wunhua Rd. to be a bustling night market. Shops at two sides are placed closely with all kinds of traditional light repast and delicacies. Shoppers are like streams making the city sleepless.
The delicacies on the night market, including dishes from North to South, traditional or modern food, enjoy a good name, attracting gluttons to eat here. Do not miss!
